What is Samba de Gafieira?
Samba de Gafieira is the elegant partner form of Samba. It emerged in the dance halls (Gafieiras) of Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s – a meeting of samba rhythm, foxtrot, and urban dance culture.
Unlike solo samba, Gafieira is a partner dance with characteristic Chamadas, optional lifts (Floreios) and a flowing, rhythmically precise basic step.
Cultural Heritage
The Gafieiras were meeting places for Rio's working class, where Black and White danced together – an expression of social cohesion. Since 2014, Samba de Gafieira has been recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Characteristics
- Lively 2/4 rhythm with lots of swing
- Freedom to improvise within a clear structure
- Optional Floreios (acrobatic elements)
- Expressive, playful character
- Close, trusting partner connection
