What is Dança do Salão?
Dança do Salão – literally 'ballroom dance' – is the umbrella term for Brazilian social dances that developed in city centres. In a narrower sense, it refers to a spirited, improvised partner dance with flowing hip movement and lively dialogue.
It needs no big stage – just music and a dance floor.
Origins
The term emerged in São Paulo in the 1980s, when the urban dance scene exploded. It blends regional influences from north-east Brazil with the elegance of city ballrooms.
What Makes It Special
- High improvisational freedom, no rigid pattern
- Strong emotional connection between partners
- Variety of rhythms and musical styles
- Open to all ages and levels
