What is Forró?
Forró is a warm, straightforward partner dance from north-eastern Brazil. Danced in a close embrace to a simple two-step rhythm, it's accompanied by accordion, zabumba drum and triangle.
It's the dance of the Festas Juninas – joyful, sociable, and deeply rooted in Brazil's rural culture.
Origins
Forró originated in rural north-eastern Brazil and spread across the country through the 20th century. The name today refers to both the musical style and the dance itself, central to the traditional Festas Juninas held every June.
